Tuesday in Santa Cruz Harbor

Dinner is finally over, and everyone is waiting for me to start a euchre game, so this is a quick post. We never left the marina today, except for a quick walk to the grocery store 3 blocks away. In the morning, Jane, Nancy and I went out and explored the marina by rowing the kayak and dinghy. Half the boats here have to pass underneath a 30 foot bridge to get to their slips, and they have to unstep their masts and lay them forward towards their bow in order to pass beneath the bridge. We got a long explanation from one of the boat owners, and then watched it being done later.

There is a rowing center under the bridge, lots of sculls, kayaks, Hawaiian outriggers, etc. That took up some time, then we visited the Santa Cruz Yacht Club. Nearly a full day in itself, but we found some time to have a diesel mechanic replace a hose on the engine, and Paul finished some safety items while we rowed. A bottle of champagne on the beach, barbecued tri-tip on the boat, and now euchre, and we're calling it a great vacation day.

The best part for me was the diesel mechanic. He changed the hose, using an automotive piece that Tom had brought, and actually asked me about the procedure for bleeding the coolant system afterwards. I watched him do exactly what I would have done, and certainly will have the confidence to do myself later. A well spent $80 for peace of mind, as he was able to pressurize the system and test it for leaks.
